It looked like it was going somewhere. It did what most anime don't do and actually led to a marriage instead of edging you forever about the potential of a relationship. And then the story cuts forward a year. I knew at that point that it had nothing else worth saying. To highlight how much of an L that is, think of your favorite show. Think of the stories you're on the edge of your seat waiting for a conclusion for. This has NONE. You're not waiting, per se, for anything. It's about a man who gets married, has a kid, and revives a small mining town on the way to becoming mayor. Isekai Nonbiri Nouka, which isn't a great show, does the village building better. Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi does the food prn better as well as adventuring. Benriya Saitou-san, Isekai ni Iku does relationships and companions better. My issue is it doesn't do anything well, uniquely, or memorably. I predicted the last ep 5 eps ago bc it could only go there. It's a story on rails. You know exactly where it's going, and you can even be prescient over what stops it'll make along the way.
This show doesn't have unanswered questions, which is why they felt comfortable cutting forward the year. What changed? That would spoil things. Let's say that 2 out of the 3 reveals could have happened immediately.
These aren't persuasive arguments. It's a fact that the show cut forward a year. It's a fact that you can't come up with another show that's done it, and if you picture a show you respected [or heard of], you don't suspect that them cutting forward a year would help the story (Attack on Titan isn't a better show if they cut forward a year. A year would rob it of the stakes related to time and the immediacy of specific actions taking place. Berserk isn't enhanced by cutting forward a year. Nor is Overlord.) It's a fact that the shows I mentioned do what this show does better than it does, and are currently doing so.
